Comprising an area of 254 square miles, Ballard County, the ninety-third county in order of formation, was established on February 15, 1842, out of parts of Hickman and McCracken counties and named in honor of Capt. Bland Ballard, a participant in the battle of Fallen Timbers (1793) and the River Raisin (1813), and a member of the Kentucky General Assembly.

The Ballard County Courthouse, located at Fourth and Court Streets in Wickliffe, is the center of government of Ballard County, Kentucky. The courthouse was constructed from 1900 to 1905. It was the first permanent courthouse in Wickliffe and replaced a courthouse in Blandville that burned down in 1880.
The County Circuit Court Clerk is located at the courthouse. They have court records from 1842.

The Ballard-Carlisle Historical and Genealogical Society provides limited lookup capabilities for research. However they do have microfilm of Kentucky Death Certificates for the years 1911 – latest year released, Court Records and Newspapers; Microfiche of Kentucky births and deaths; Surname files of families as well as communities, churches, and schools; and Oral Histories.
Also, the Society sells 2 volumes of of family history books which may be ordered by mailing the order form that can be downloaded from their website.
