The county seat of Boyd County is Catlettsburg. The county was formed in 1860 from parts of Greenup, Carter, and Lawrence counties.


Most of the primary government offices are housed in the County Courthouse.

This library also houses the Minnie Winder Genealogy & Local History Room. This is the largest genealogical collection in the Tri-State and Eastern Kentucky. The collection also covers Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina as these are the states from which settlers migrated.

It is also possible to use interlibrary loans with the Ohio Historical Society, Virginia State Library, Tennessee State Archives and others.
